You may have done the same in Pokemon, but at least there I felt like I was losing someone important to me. They're tools, and when one isn't useful anymore you swap them out. (atm only have 3 exp cores) It's not even far in the game, for the first one once you reach Parum there's a quest that will pass you a lv.2 one. 1-2 hours in you'll start getting cores- there's several quests/trades that offer them and you can craft them. The funny thing is you don't have to grind (much if at all). The people saying 'lol learn to grind' are actually wrong, tbh. It can make leveling up weaker mons you want to add to your party a chore.

I can understand why people don't like it- while I'm not sure the specifics, I'd seen reviews that said it was based off your reputation (how many tamers defeated, uniques captured, etc) and the average level of your party, but only with at most 3~ levels' variance.

The level scaling is nowhere near as bad as some reviews make it sound- I bought the game after having read reviews of it, and have played accordingly- it was only much of a hurdle at the start, though.
